Impact Journey School is a school designed to meet the needs of students on adapted curriculum.
The majority of our instruction takes place in a one-to-one or small group setting in order to individualize our instruction to meet the needs of each student. Due to the varying needs of our students, we do not use one specific curriculum. Instead, we have access to a variety of curriculums and, through assessment, determine which will best meet the needs of each student. Some of the curriculum we use includes: VB MAPP, ABLLS, Reading A-Z, The Autism Helper curriculum, KinderMath, FirstieMath, The Science of Spelling, Scholastic Magazines, and various Life Skills units.
We also provide a few specials through contracted agencies outside of IJS. Our students receive music therapy each week through Allegro Music and Adapted PE to teach various sports and address balance and coordination. Each month we also contract with Little Independent Artists to provide "Page to Stage" which is a literacy enrichment program that brings popular children's books and stories to life with hands on activities, movement and acting out.
Verbal Behavior Milestones Assessment and Placement Program
The VB-MAPP is a criterion-referenced assessment tool, curriculum guide, and skill tracking system that is designed for children with autism, and other individuals who demonstrate language delays. The VB-MAPP is based on B.F. Skinner’s (1957) analysis of verbal behavior, established developmental milestones, and research from the field of behavior analysis. There are five components of the VB-MAPP, and collectively they provide a baseline level of performance, a direction for intervention, a system for tracking skill acquisition, a tool for outcome measures and other language research projects, and a framework for curriculum planning. Each of the skills in the VB-MAPP is not only measurable and developmentally balanced, but they are balanced across the verbal operants and other related skills.
Reading A-Z
Reading A-Z delivers research-based leveled reading resources at developmentally appropriate levels for every K-5 learning environment. The product contains a wealth of leveled materials and tools that make it easy to provide the personalized instruction each student needs. Reading A-Z was created with the idea that no two students learn to read in exactly the same way. Reading A-Z also offers a number of resources that teach skills beyond reading. The product's collection of collaborative lessons and activities help foster other critical 21st century skills such as communication, critical thinking, problem solving, and teamwork.
